25 years ago the engineers and designers at Kestrel decided to think outside the conventional road frame building box and began using carbon fiber. The superb strength, stiffness and lightweight characteristics of high modulus carbon fiber have become mainstream expectations and Kestrel not only laid the foundation for this industry shift but they have remained one of the leaders in improvements in aerodynamic frame manufacturing.
The dedicated folks at Kestrel give you the big 4 features that are to be expected in a $4500 high modulus frame set and those being; aerodynamics, strength, stiffness and an overall lightweight frame set. The question is how well do all of these expected features come together to not only work with the rider but instill what we are all really looking for and that is confidence? When we first turned the pedals the strength and stiffness made us grin. It was extremely easy to throw it into a corner at high speeds when running it through it's crit racing paces but after test riding 100s of bikes over the years the one place we find that separates carbon fiber frame sets from the pack is in descending. A good, strong climber will be one on just about any frame put under them but when descending at 50mph in windy conditions a frame's geometry and aerodynamic design must become one. The Rt 1000 SL is a dream to descend on. The aerodynamics seem to stabilize the frame the faster you push it and the RT 1000 SL is what I call "a hot cup of coffee" at 45 mph meaning the bike is so stable that your hands remain relaxed enough to take a swig of the water bottle at any speeds. When the bike is stable, the rider is relaxed and the shoulder ache and muscle fatigue from over gripping does not creep in.
